Library Staff Receive Training on RFID Library Inventory Management Tool

Following the official commissioning of the Mahatma Gandhi Graduate Library on the 14th of June, 2021 at the University of Nairobi’s main campus by the External Affairs Minister of the Republic of India, Dr. S. Jaishankar, and the library department undertook to train a section of its staff on the new innovative systems that had been installed at the refurbished library.

Refitted into an ultra-modern facility, the Mahatma Gandhi Graduate Library strives to provide quality services and academic information resources to the University Community with a focus on post-graduate students and academic staff.

The one-day training was opened by the Director, Library Services, and presided over by the Deputy Directors Technical and Planning. It was attended by several library staff and was conducted by a team from Extreme Wireless Ltd, the contractor appointed to install the new systems.

The training was largely practical and covered the following areas -

  1. Biometric enrolment of library users via the Access Management System.
  2. RFID Library Inventory Management System
  3. Automated self-service station where students can transact book loans & returns.
  4. Circulation functions enabled by conversion from barcode tagging to RFID tagging

This capacity-building exercise was aimed at enhancing service delivery and further points to the University’s efforts to embrace upcoming technologies and innovations towards realizing its commitment to becoming a world-class institution of higher learning.
