On 27th November, 2025, the Library Team, led by the Director Angela Mumo, received archival materials of a Kikuyu play entitled ‘Ngaahika Ndeenda’ (I Will Marry When I Want). The play was written by Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Ngugi wa Mirii in the Kikuyu language and first performed in Kenya in 1977 at Kamiriithu Educational and Cultural Centre. This play covers colonial themes of class struggle, poverty, gender, culture, religion, modernity vs. tradition, and marriage and family.
On behalf of the Kamirithu Afterlives research project, Kenny Cupers and Benjamin Makau officially donated a set of important archival materials to the Jomo Kenyatta Memorial Library. These items include:
- An original copy of the Ngaahika Ndeenda manuscript, and
- Personal and family photographs donated by the original actors and production crew.
These historical materials will go a long way in enriching the archival collection and providing valuable knowledge for the users. The Director Library assured the two researchers that the materials remain safe at the University.
