The Library Directorate today held a meeting with representatives from the Kenya Society for the Blind (KSB) to explore areas of collaboration aimed at enhancing access to information resources for staff and students with print disabilities.
Mr. Martin Kieti and Mr. Alex Kaluyu represented the Kenya Society for the Blind. Discussions focused on ways in which the two institutions can work together to promote inclusive access to information. Key among the topics discussed was the Marrakesh Treaty and its significance to libraries. The representatives highlighted that the treaty allows the reproduction and sharing of copyrighted works without the author’s permission, provided the materials are used exclusively by persons with print disabilities.
The KSB team also introduced the Library Directorate to Book Share, an online library that offers a wide range of accessible reading materials freely available to individuals with print disabilities. They proposed a partnership to facilitate the sharing of popular books and academic theses from the University of Nairobi through the Book Share platform to benefit users with print disabilities.
The meeting concluded with an agreement that such collaboration would be possible after the establishment of appropriate policies and mechanisms to guide the sharing of materials. The library was represented by the director, Madam Angela Mumo, the deputy director, technical services, Madam Rosemary Otando, and the deputy director, administration and user services, Madam Evelyn Anambo.
