Eleanor Cole Papers

Lady Eleanor Cole was a British woman settler married to Galbraith Lowry Egerton Cole and they settled in Kekopy Ranch near Lake Elementaita. The couple settled at their Kekopy ranch and had to contend with devastating locust swarms, drought, and stock diseases. When her husband died in 1929, she continued farming together with her two sons David and Arthur.

In the 1940s, she built the Church of Goodwill, Kariandusi and it was opened in 1947. The church was built in memory of Galbraith and in honor of her sons who had gone to war but came back home unharmed. The collection mostly comprises of letters concerning the returns of Kekopy Ranch and press cuttings among others dated 1919 to 1961.

These are the letters from Eric Pardoe to Nell (Eleanor) and vice versa about Kekopy farm from immediately after the Galbraith’s death until the war, 1930 – 1945. It also includes press cuttings of Mr. Theodore Powys’ murder case that was killed in October 1931 in Samburu. He was a white ranch manager of Lady Eleanor Cole.
