New Scientific Database - Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE)

The University of Nairobi through the Library & Information Services department is now subscribed to the JoVE database.

This is a new product that aims to improve scientific research and education through engaging scientific videos, numbering more than 18,000 audio-visual laboratory methods, and scientific concepts.

JoVE stands for the Journal of Visualized Experiments and focuses on STEM subject areas -Biology, Chemistry, Statistics, Environmental Sciences, Physics, Engineering, Psychology, Clinical Pharmacology, Medicine, Neuroscience, Immunology & Infection among others.

JoVE offers the following benefits to researchers:

  • A blend of videos featuring both animation and real-life footage, students can easily learn the basic key terms and concepts behind each of their topics.
  • The students can also view videos that show how to perform various experiments in the laboratory environment and be more comfortable when entering a lab in real life.
  • The videos can serve as a great supplementary tool to the classroom teachings and allow students to visualize what the professor/lecturer has explained.
  • Each of the videos comes with the option to take a quiz that the students can use as a revision tool or for the lecturers to assess their students’ knowledge of the topic.

Faculties that will benefit from the JoVE Database

  1. Science & Technology - covers subjects in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Earth and Climate sciences, biochemistry, and environmental sciences.
  2. Health Sciences - collection covers both Medicine, nursing, emergency medicine, critical care, food science and nutrition.
  3. Engineering - covers 8 of the main aspects of engineering; Bioengineering, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Structural, Biomedical, Materials, and Aeronautical.
  4. Agriculture/Veterinary Medicine - covers animal science and agricultural environments in areas of biodiversity and soil microorganisms among others.
