GUIDELINES ON USE OF SPECIAL SERVICES

CARRELS

Study carrels are individual study rooms in the Library designed to facilitate research and provide a quiet atmosphere for study. They are small isolated, wired with electrical and data outlets with a lockable door to which a registered graduate student, faculty or researcher is granted access on the request. Carrels may be assigned on annual, monthly, quarterly, weekly or daily basis and may be renewed at the end of the period until the carrel is no longer needed.

PURPOSE - Carrels are intended to support research and academic work by University of Nairobi faculty and graduate students

ELIGIBILITY - Graduate students, faculty and researchers of University of Nairobi qualify for allocation of reading carrels. Priority will be granted to PHD students on fieldwork (data analysis stage).

APPLICATION AND RENEWAL

  1. Graduate or researcher is required to apply for a carrel. Application forms are available at the MGGL Library Circulation Desk upon request. Recommendation letter from the Graduate School will be required to ascertain the research stage.
  2. Carrels will be assigned on first come, first served basis for completed and approved application form.
  3. If a carrel is not available, the student will be kept on a waiting list for the next available carrel.
  4. A student will be issued with carrel key upon production of payment receipt from the Library Accountant.

GUIDELINES OF USAGE

  1. Carrels are assigned only to individuals at a fee and are not to be used as discussion rooms.
  2. Carrels are shared, with two people assigned to each carrel room.
  3. Carrels are only available for use during the regular open hours of the Library.
  4. Carrels will be assigned for only one week, one month or quarterly renewable twice, subject to the students on the waiting list.
  5. Carrels are to be locked when not occupied. The Library will not be responsible for damage or theft of personal items left in the carrels.
  6. Remove all library materials that are not procedurally borrowed from the carrel after use.
  7. The power ports are for laptop and phones use only.
  8. Carrels have been furnished for their intended use. No furniture is to be removed or added, nor any other modifications to the room allowed.
  9. Charges will be incurred by the occupants for any damage to the carrel.
  10. If the carrel is in need of cleaning or maintenance, notify staff at the Circulation Desk immediately.
  11. Carrel key is to be returned after every use to the circulation desk. Failure to return the key or if the key is lost, the patron will be surcharged Kshs.5, 000.00 as the cost of replacing the lock.
