The 7th Faculty & Administrators’ Training Workshop on Research Support Held at The University of Malawi (16th - 19th July, 2018)

The 7th Faculty and Administrators’ Training Workshop was conducted at the University of Malawi, College of Health Sciences from the 16th -19th July, 2018. The workshop was organized by the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA). The aim of the workshop was to equip faculty and administrators that support research and knowledge to enable them effectively support and strengthen research activities and consolidate networking in their institutions.

The objectives of the workshop was to; promote and strengthen research in African Universities, promote development of research through training and infrastructure and to bring together research support staff to deliberate and appreciate their research role. Sixty faculty and administrators from various universities in Africa attended the workshop.

The following are topics were covered during the workshop;

  1. Objectives and achievements of CARTA
  2. Institutional research governance structure including forming faculty research committees
  3.  Different leadership skills/styles
  4. Postgraduate research support
  5. Institutionalization  and understanding of institutional challenges in research
  6. What institutional departments can do to improve research
  7. Knowledge management
  8. Proposal writing for funding and innovations

The workshop was graced by Secretary of Education, Malawi, Justin Saidi and the Vice Chancellor, University of Malawi, Professor John Kalenga Saka. They emphasized on the need to work together in Africa to improve and achieve highest standard of research and doctoral learning to enhance development of the country and solve complex issues. Collaboration was also emphasized in the opening remarks.
