Library Conducts Orientation for Defence College Staff

The Library held orientation session for senior officers from the National Defence College (NDC) on Monday 14th May 2018. The session was led by the College Librarian, CHSS Mr Harun Mugo and Mr John Kanori (Circulation Librarian) alongside Mr Aggrey Luyiya (East Africana), Mrs Mary Njogu (E-resources) and Mr Timothy Nzioki (Digital Content).

The course undertaken by the group is offered at NDC, Karen in collaboration with Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies (IDIS) University of Nairobi. The participants were drawn from Kenya, (Kenya Defence Force), Tanzania, Burundi, Malawi, Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

The officers were briefed on library open hours from Monday to Sunday, online registration requirements and library services. Some of the library services they were introduced to include staff assistance and guidance, lending of books, reference books & other information materials, photocopying, access to e-resources (e-books, e-journals, e-thesis.), training users how to access information (information literacy) and access to archives and rare collection.

They were also introduced to various types of information resources accessible/available from the library. Some of the resources include books, newspapers, journals, archival sources and e-resources. They were briefed in details on various type of e-resources including e-books, e-journals and digital resources.

The importance of acquiring information literacy abilities was also emphasized. They informed that the library equips users with skills necessary for effective identification, location, selection and use of information ethically by conducting e-resources workshops. The officers were reminded to observe research ethics while undertaking research by avoiding plagiarism.

Then followed a lively Question and Answer session where the officers interacted with the library staff. After the interactive Library Talk which was held in the JKML Boardroom, the officers had a guided library tour took them to the following sections:  Issue desk / Reserve section – Online Public Access Catalogue section – Ground Floor, Periodicals section – basement, Archives section – basement, Shelves and reading areas – all floors, E-resources section – 3rd Floor and East Africana collection – 3rd Floor.

The officers were reminded to come and register with the library to enjoy all library privileges including borrowing books.
